What to Wear to Your First Boxing Class: A Beginner’s Fightwear Guide
Your first boxing class is coming up, and now you are standing in front of your closet wondering what to wear.
Do you need boxing shoes? Should you buy gloves first? Are regular gym clothes okay?
Take a breath. You do not need professional fightwear for your first class. The main goal is to wear something comfortable, safe, and easy to move in.
Here is what you need to know before you head to the gym.
Choose Comfortable Workout Clothes
Boxing involves a lot of movement. You will be punching, turning your body, moving your feet, and probably sweating more than you expect.
A breathable T-shirt, tank top, or workout top is a good choice. Your shirt should feel comfortable without being too loose. Very loose clothing may move around and distract you while you train.
For the bottom, wear athletic shorts, leggings, or light workout pants. Make sure you can bend your knees and move in every direction without feeling restricted.
Avoid jeans, heavy sweatpants, or clothing with metal zippers. They can feel uncomfortable and may get in the way during training.
You also do not need to buy boxing shorts for your first lesson. Regular gym clothes are completely fine.
Wear Supportive Indoor Shoes
Unlike Muay Thai and kickboxing, boxing is usually practised while wearing shoes.
For your first class, clean running shoes or training shoes will normally work. Choose a pair that feels light, comfortable, and stable when you move from side to side.
Try not to wear shoes with very thick or heavy soles. Boxing requires quick footwork, so bulky shoes may make it harder to move and turn.
You do not need boxing shoes as a beginner. They can provide better ankle support and make it easier to move inside the ring, but you can wait until you know that you enjoy boxing before buying a pair.
Some gyms may have specific rules about indoor shoes, so check with the gym before class.
Ask About Gloves and Hand Wraps
Many boxing gyms have gloves that new students can borrow or rent. Before buying your own pair, ask the gym what they provide and what glove size they recommend.
You will probably also need hand wraps. Hand wraps are worn underneath your gloves to support your hands and wrists.
They may look confusing at first, but do not worry. Your coach can show you how to wrap your hands correctly. Nobody expects you to know how on your first day.
A quick message to the gym can help:
“Do I need to bring my own gloves and hand wraps?”
Leave Jewellery at Home
Remove rings, watches, bracelets, necklaces, and large earrings before training. Jewellery can catch on your gloves or equipment, and it may hurt you or another person.
It is also helpful to tie back long hair and keep your fingernails short.
Bring a water bottle, a small towel, and an extra shirt if you think you may need one after class.
You Do Not Need to Look Like a Boxer Yet
For your first class, comfortable workout clothes, supportive shoes, and a bottle of water are usually enough. Ask the gym about gloves and hand wraps before you arrive.
Do not worry about looking inexperienced. Everyone in the gym had a first class once.
Wear something that helps you move freely, listen to your coach, and focus on learning. The right outfit should help you feel comfortable—not give you one more thing to stress about.
A few good basics can also make your first class more comfortable. Try a pair of boxing gloves for cushioning, hand wraps for added wrist and knuckle support, and a lightweight training shirt that lets you move freely.
