How to Get Smell Out of Boxing Gloves
Boxing gloves can start to smell after training, especially if they stay damp inside your gym bag for too long. It is a common problem, and it does not mean you are doing anything wrong. Gloves naturally collect sweat and moisture during training, and if they do not dry properly, odor can build up over time.
The good news is that you do not need to deep clean your gloves every day. A few simple steps can help reduce the smell and make your gloves feel fresher for your next session.
Let Your Gloves Breathe First
The first step is simple: take your gloves out of your bag as soon as possible after training.
When gloves stay closed in a warm, damp bag, the smell usually gets worse. Open them up and place them in a dry, well ventilated area. If the inside feels very wet, you can gently press a clean towel inside the glove opening to absorb extra moisture.
Try not to use a hair dryer, heater, or direct strong sunlight. Too much heat may affect the shape, padding, or outer material of the gloves. Slow air drying is usually safer.
Wipe the Inside and Outside
After training, use a clean cloth or towel to wipe the outside of your gloves. You can also gently wipe around the inside opening, especially near the wrist area where sweat often builds up.
If needed, use a slightly damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap, but avoid soaking the gloves. Boxing gloves are not meant to be washed like hand wraps, and too much water can make them harder to dry.
After wiping them, leave the gloves open so they can dry fully.
Use an Odor Absorber
If your gloves already smell, an odor absorber can help. You can use glove deodorizers, cedar inserts, or a small pouch made for absorbing moisture.
Some people also use baking soda, but it is better to keep it inside a small cloth pouch or sock instead of putting it directly inside the glove. This helps absorb odor without leaving powder inside your gloves.
Leave the odor absorber inside the gloves overnight, then take it out before training.
Do Not Cover the Smell with Perfume
It may be tempting to spray perfume or a strong scent inside your gloves, but this usually does not solve the real problem. Strong sprays can mix with sweat and make the smell worse. They may also irritate your skin if the inside of the glove stays damp.
A light deodorizing spray made for sports gear can be okay, but the most important thing is still drying the gloves properly.
Wear Clean Hand Wraps
Hand wraps are one of the easiest ways to keep glove odor under control. They absorb sweat before it goes directly into your gloves.
If you reuse sweaty wraps, the smell can transfer back into your gloves. Try to wash your wraps regularly and keep an extra pair ready, especially if you train often.
Clean wraps, dry gloves, and good airflow can make a big difference.
Know When It Is Time to Replace Them
Sometimes gloves are too old or too heavily used to fully remove the smell. If the inside still smells bad after drying, wiping, and using odor absorbers, it may be time to replace them.
