How to Choose Boxing Gloves: Size, Fit, and Wrist Support
Buying your first pair of boxing gloves can be confusing. You may see 10 oz, 12 oz, 14 oz, and 16 oz gloves, but what do those numbers mean? Should the gloves feel tight? And how much wrist support do you really need?
A good pair of gloves should feel comfortable, protect your hands, and suit the type of training you plan to do. You do not need the most expensive pair—you just need the right pair for you.
Understand What “Oz” Means
Boxing gloves are usually measured in ounces, written as “oz.” This number mainly refers to the weight of the glove and the amount of padding it has. It does not directly describe the size of the space inside.
Lighter gloves may be used for certain types of bag or pad training, while heavier gloves usually provide more padding. Many gyms also require larger gloves for sparring to help protect both training partners.
However, every gym may have different rules. Before buying anything, ask your coach what glove weight they recommend for your body weight and training style.
Check How the Gloves Fit
A glove should feel secure without painfully squeezing your hand. Your fingers should reach comfortably toward the end, but they should not feel bent or crushed.
Remember that you will usually wear hand wraps underneath your gloves. When trying on a pair, wear wraps if possible. A glove that feels perfect on your bare hand may become too tight once your hands are wrapped.
If the glove is too large, your hand may move around inside. This can make it harder to form a proper fist and control your punches. If it is too small, you may feel pressure around your fingers or thumb.
Different brands can fit differently, even when the gloves have the same weight. This is why trying them on is more helpful than choosing only by the number on the label.
Do Not Ignore Wrist Support
Wrist support may not be the first thing you notice, but it is one of the most important parts of a boxing glove.
When you punch, your wrist should stay in a strong and straight position. A glove with a secure wrist closure can help keep it stable and reduce unnecessary movement.
Velcro gloves are popular for regular training because they are easy to put on and remove by yourself. Lace-up gloves can offer a close fit, but you normally need someone else to help tighten them.
Check that the wrist area feels firm without cutting off your circulation. If you can easily bend your wrist in every direction while wearing the glove, the support may be too loose.
Choose Comfort and Protection First
The best boxing glove is not always the most stylish or expensive one. Focus on the fit, padding, wrist support, and how you plan to use it.
Ask your coach, try on different models, and do not rush your decision. The right gloves should help you feel secure and focused, so you can spend less time adjusting your equipment and more time enjoying your training.
